Last week in honor of American Craft Beer Week, (May 14-20, 2012), we were trying a new craft beer every day. It was a lot of fun, and a great excuse to stay beer soaked. We see no reason to stop now. Today, I crack open a whole cone imperial IPA from Sierra Nevada.
Sierra Nevada – Hoptimum – Whole Cone Imperial IPA
ABV 10.4% – 100 IBU
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.
Resinous “new-school” and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.
Hoptimum pours a rich amber color with a frothy head up top. Another beautiful looking beer from the fine folks in Chico, CA. It has a crisp hop flavor and is very drinkable for an imperial IPA at 10.4% ABV.
I think this might be a regular occupant of my fridge this summer. In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this one makes it to the Top of the Hops, Summer Beer List. When you want a big hoppy IPA that is surprisingly drinkable, look no further.
5 beer soaked caps from me on this one.
