The Beer:  Russian River Pliny the Elder

Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, “Lupus salictarius”, meaning wolf among scrubs.” Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, Humulus lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

I’ve only had the opportunity to drink four Plinys, and I remember every single one for a very good reason.  Personally I find it very difficult to pick a favorite anything, and that’s why I stick to top 3 lists… music – Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd;  Dessert – tiramisu, Spice cake with cool whip, homemade apple pie; and yes, beer – Russian River Pliny the Elder, Green Flash West Coast IPA, and Coronado Idiot IPA .   I don’t get to many opportunities to drink anything from Russian River, let alone a Pliny, and I’m sure that absence makes the heart grow fonder.  However, when I do, I enjoy every sip (gulp).  In describing a Pliny, the best word I can come up with is “BALANCE”.  It has everything I like in an IPA; citrus, pine, bite, great finish.  I’m sure the beer snobs out there will tell you how it hangs on the glass, has a great nose, and what it pairs well with.  I paired this with the Bills beating the Patriots and the Yankees beating the Red Sox and it paired really well : )  In all seriousness, I don’t need any of that.  I like beer and this is good great beer.  enough said.  Respect your Elder(s).
