Canned craft beer, it’s not just for pool parties. Last summer I wrote a post about bringing canned craft beer to pool parties, but this year I want to amend that thought to say that you don’t have to be at a pool party to enjoy canned craft beer. Especially when stuff like this exists.
Deviant Dale’s – India Pale Ale – 8% ABV – 85 IBU
Deviant Dale’s IPA was born at the crossroads, in a juke joint, as if Dale’s Pale Ale sold its soul to balance Deviant’s foreboding aromas of citrus, grapefruit rind and piney resins with a copper ball-of-fire color and inscrutable finish. The 2011 GABF Silver Medal Winner (American IPA Category) is the Devil incarnate with untold amounts of malt and hedonistic Columbus dry-hopping. Oskar Blues’ southern spirit caught a northbound blues bus to ColoRADo to deliver the boundary bustin’ brewery’s first 16 oz. tallboy can.
It pours a clean copper color with a light foamy head. There is a bit of malt in the hoppy nose, hinting at the well-balanced brew that awaits. First sip has the citrus and pine that you expect from an IPA and is complimented by a subtle malt flavor. All in all it is a terrific IPA.
4 caps from me.
In typical Oskar Blues fashion, while the complexity of the beer is entertaining your palette, the text on the can is equally amusing. Up top we have “Sippin on a Tall Boy” on one side and “Let’s Sling A Little Mud, Girl” on the other side. and when you are finished with the beer, (or before you open it), flip it upside down to see the “canned on” date and deviant instructions for recycling. “SMASH WITH FOREHEAD”.
