Lagunitas Brewing Company – Petaluma, CA
Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale – 9.8% ABV – 66.6 IBU
Our oxymoronic ‘Imperial Mild’ – A redux to remember the ’05 St. Paddy’s Day Massacre. Defiant as to style … We Can say for sure it is unforgiven and unrepentant. We brewed this especially bitter ale in remembrance of the 2005 St. Patrick’s Day Massacre… and in celebration of our subsequent 20-day suspension in January of 2006… Cheers!
This one is an enigma wrapped in a puzzle and shrouded in mystery. And I’m not just saying that because of the “Undercover” name. By that, I mean that when I poured it into a glass it had a nice rich color, a hoppy nose and malty backbone with a high gravity that told me this was going to be a big beer. But I had a hard time finding a category to place it into. It’s hoppy enough to be an IPA, malty enough to be a Pale Ale, and too dark to be an Imperial Red Ale. So I won’t try to categorize this one, I’ll just say that I like it… I like it a lot.
4 beer soaked caps from me on this one.
Seek it out and try it. Be warned, it’s a big beer.
