Firestone Walker – Double Jack

 You Must Try This Beer!

Firestone Double Jack

So let me start off by saying that if I ever come to your place and find an unopened bottle of Firestone Walker Double Jack in your possession I will force you to open it and share it with me. And I’m not a violent person, but I might even knock a pregnant woman out of the way to get this beer. So don’t make your pregnant wife go beer shopping for you, I’m just sayin’.

You see, this one kicked Pliny The Elder off the top of my IPA list. Yeah, I know, I usually don’t show my cards until much further down the page when I reveal my bottle cap rating in my beer reviews. But, WOW! I don’t know why I waited so long to try this one.

The Beer

Firestone Walker Brewing Company

Double Jack
Imperial IPA – 9.5%

Double Jack IPA is our first ever Imperial IPA. It features a big malty middle to cloak the high alcohol and mouth puckering hop bitterness. Huge tangerine, grapefruit and juicy fruit aroma blossom over the herbal blue basil and malt earthiness of this aggressive beer. Best enjoyed in moderation.

The Review

Firestone Double JackAdd this one to your beer bucket list as one of those beers you need to try before you die.

As you can see from the photo it pours a beautiful amber color with a healthy head up top. A great big citrusy nose sets the expectation up front that this is going to be a great beer. It doesn’t disappoint. The flavor profile on this one is extremely well crafted. As a 9.5% beer it’s very smooth and drinkable, but beware it packs a wallop.

Speaking of “wallop”, there’s a Lion and a Bear fighting on the label. I’d like to think that there’s only one bottle of Double Jack left in their fridge and they’ve come to fisticuffs over who gets it. My money is on the bear.

I mentioned already that this one knocked Pliny off its top spot in my heart. But to be fair, every IPA I have had since my first Pliny The Elder has had to live up the standard that Russian River Brewing had set. Well, the bar has been moved up a little higher with this one.

Firestone Double JackI know I’m setting this one up for a huge fall if it doesn’t live up to they hype that I’ve just given it. But hey, it’s only one man’s opinion. And this one man really likes this beer… a lot.

It’s a part of the Firestone Walker Proprietor’s Reserve series. What does that mean? Here’s a blurb from their site…

The finest of what we have to offer, these extremely limited beers represent the ingenuity and creativity of our talented brewing team.  These beers spend several months, even years in a combination of retired bourbon, Firestone Union and wine barrels.  Each lot is full of complex aromas and flavors, attributes reached through careful aging.  These beers are on the cutting edge and are changing the perception of beer.

I know that Firestone Walker definitely changed my perception of Imperial IPA.
5 caps from me, but then I bet you saw that coming.

  1. Inspiring sir, truly inspiring. This is indeed a great beer, and I believe one may be hiding in the man fridge. No need to worry, it will be gone post-haste.
